Ohitika Najin Win Oti (Standing Strong Woman) shelter has lost the lease on the Rapid City , S.D. home it has used as a shelter since 2007.
The eight-bedroom home was leased by a private owner to Cangleska Inc. for use as a shelter in an urban area where a significant Native population resides.

Cangleska Inc. has six weeks to find a new home for its Rapid City shelter which serves native women from the Rapid City area and the nearby Pine Ridge reservation.
Losing the lease on the property happened as Cangleska was launching a capital campaign to build a new, larger facility.
The shelter’s original intent was to provide transitional housing for women leaving the reservation for their own safety.
A growing number of local Native women have stayed in the shelter with the average stay for a mother and her children about 19 days. Always full, the shelter has had a waiting list. Better than one-third of the women and children who stay at the shelter are from Rapid City .
Cangleska Inc. has limited resources so it relies on donations in order to fund the relocation of Ohitika.
