Gloria was the Shelter Coordinator for 10 years and later worked for Cangleska as the coordinator of Winyan Ki Igluonihanpi, a women's day treatment program.
She was a lifelong advocate for women and children who believed that the world could become a safe place for women and children and she worked tirelessly toward that goal. She was a driving force in the passage of the Oglala Sioux Tribe’s Children’s Code, landmark tribal legislation ensuring tribal children and families’ safety and support. Gloria was known for her leadership abilities, serving as a tribal court judge.
Gloria was a Director for Sacred Hills Healing Center, Deputy Director and TASA Coordinator, Associate judge for the Oglala Sioux Tribe, and Child Protection Social Worker for the South Dakota Department of Social Services.
She is remembered for her kindness, infectious giggle, beatiful smile and strong spirituality. She was loved, admired and will be missed.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Opal; two sisters, Patricia “Patty” Pourier and Theresa “Tess” LeBeaux; and one son, Cory Wayne Provost.
She is survived by her husband of 12 years, Russell Cournoyer, Thunder Valley; one son, Casey Provost, Thunder Valley; four daughters, Alicia Provost, Karlee Provost, Ethleen Cournoyer and Renae Cournoyer, all of Thunder Valley; her father, Clarence “Pat” Pourier, Thunder Valley; two sisters, Candace Pourier and Mary Kamerzell, both of Thunder Valley; six brothers, Pierre Pourier, Hobart Pourier, Steve Pourier, Sean Pourier, and Gary Pourier, all of Thunder Valley, and Michael Pourier, Rapid City; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 7 at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Porcupine with interment at the Pourier Family Cemetery in Thunder Valley. |
