What are the challenges of peace in the world today?

Peacekeeping organizations and associations in many countries all over the world have made efforts to establish and sustain peace. However, their initiatives have encountered many challenges due to several factors.

That was why the ambassador of peace Prem Rawat made the remark that many countries in the world are in conflicts. Ever since the creation of the United Nations, several humanitarian activities have been undertaken to fight for peace and restore global harmony. Yet, they have faced difficulties.

What are the challenges of peace in the world today?

Acts of Terrorism

The Global Terrorism Index or GTI indicates that terrorism rate has increased over the last few years. Hundreds of people have died and injured from suicide car bombing and shooting in Afghanistan, in Nigeria and in Mali. The top countries where terrorism has recently occurred are Iraq, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Syria. The main actors of terrorist attacks are the Al-Qaeda,Taliban, ISIL, and Boko Haram.

Over 240 casualties in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have been caused by attacks, shootings, and massacres. Still, more tragically, over 500 hundred people got injured by the bombings every year, apart from the human losses. Unless the state itself is willing to refrain from terrorism, it will be difficult to achieve peace.

Environmental degradation

Another challenge to peacekeeping is population growth. The higher the number of the population is, the more likely the economy of the country will use up its natural resources. This will lead to the dreadful conditions of the environment due to the over exploitation of the resources.

Nations which are still endowed with the most resources will attract other powerful nations to exploit their wealth; but that will also spark civil unrest from the attacked country. Changes in the environment are also associated with the disastrous impacts of climate change. Extreme weather, droughts and flooding, melting of the ice as well as the incursions of the sea into freshwater will prevent prosperity and peace in many nations.

The negative impacts of environmental degradation trigger conflicts among nations because it will disrupt farming and damage crops. Peace agreements will therefore be broken. That is why the damage in the environment constitutes a big challenge to peacekeeping efforts.

Technology advancement

There are both some advantages and downsides of technology as far as peace building is concerned. Technology can both advance peace, but it may also promote conflict. Technology can make it difficult to promote peace, because nowadays, antagonists can plan terrorist attacks into a country by using sophisticated detection, monitoring, and surveillance systems. Robots can be engaged in attacking the opponents in the battlefield.

Apart from that, the creation of self-adjusting bullets will make it easy for the attacking country to target their enemy. Ultra-sensitive devices, whether they are chemical or biological, can be used to have accurate detection of the target, monitoring the opponent, and may cleanup a whole ethnic group before long. People in the world want peace, as Prem Rawat usually said.

However, unless an international audit system of weapons is created under a universal government, it won't be possible to maintain peace and crack down on the use of deadly weapons such as biological and chemical weapons which will annihilate us.
